This indicates that they capture less than 20% of dust and primarily target larger particles (greater than 10 pm in size), including pollen, dust mites, and carpet fibers. Although more affordable, these filters may not be suitable for individuals with asthma or allergies, as they offer limited filtration of smaller particles.

The Power of Regular Filters: MERV Ratings and Effectiveness

MERV ratings are essential in evaluating the efficiency of air filters. The higher the MERV rating, the more influential the filter is at capturing airborne particles. Regular filters, with MERV ratings up to 12, outperform electrostatic filters in terms of efficiency.

Filters with MERV ratings between one and four provide essential filtration, capturing particles above 10 pm in size. As the MERV rating increases (between five and eight), the filters become more efficient at capturing particles as small as 3.0 pm, including microbial growth, hair spray, and pudding mix. The most efficient regular filters, rated between nine and twelve, can stop particles as small as 1.0 pm in size, encompassing humidifier dust, legionella, and automobile emissions. These high-rated filters enhance indoor air quality and promote a healthier living space.

Regular filters should be changed regularly to ensure optimum performance, and annual preventive maintenance for your air conditioner is recommended.
